Closed-Circuit Cooling Towers

Overview

What it does.

A closed-circuit tower puts the process fluid inside a coil and sprays the outside of it. The evaporative cooling happens on the coil surface, so the fluid gets the performance of an open tower while staying in a sealed loop.

That is the whole reason to pay for one. Glycol circuits, chilled water serving critical plant, and anything where fouling the process side would mean a shutdown all belong in a closed circuit — as does any duty where the fluid is worth more than the water.

The trade is footprint and fan power: a closed-circuit tower is larger and draws more than an open tower of the same duty, because the heat has to cross a coil wall first.
