Overview
What it does.
An AHU is a sequence of sections in a casing: mixing box, filtration, cooling coil, sometimes heating, then the fan and discharge. The engineering is in choosing the face velocity, the coil rows and the filter grade so the unit hits its duty without excessive pressure drop.
Face velocity is the specification that quietly decides everything else. Too high and the coil carries water over into the ductwork, filters load quickly and the fan works harder for the rest of the unit’s life. A slightly larger casing at a sensible face velocity costs more once and less every year afterwards.
Custom sizing matters most on retrofit, where the plant room is fixed and a standard frame simply will not go in.
