Overview

What it does.

A dry cooler is a finned coil and a bank of fans: process fluid in, ambient air across, no water involved anywhere. Everything that makes an evaporative system efficient is also what makes it a maintenance liability, and a dry cooler simply does not have those parts.

The cost is approach temperature. A dry cooler cannot take fluid below ambient, so the loop it serves has to be designed around that — which is straightforward for machine cooling or free cooling, and impossible for anything needing a close approach.

They are the obvious answer where water is unavailable, where discharge is restricted, or where a site cannot staff the water treatment an open system needs.
