The drive train is the part of a cooling tower that actually wears. Bearings, belts, gearbox oil and motor windings all have finite lives, and they sit in the worst possible environment for them: warm, wet, and constantly moving.
Replacing a drive is usually far cheaper than replacing a tower, and it is the other half of the job when fill and eliminators are being changed — doing both at one shutdown makes considerably more sense than doing each separately.
