Uneven distribution is a quiet efficiency killer. Where nozzles are blocked or missing, that section of fill sees little water and contributes almost nothing, while the rest is overloaded. The tower is then working at a fraction of its installed surface area with no obvious fault.
Non-clog designs and a gravity basin that can be inspected without dismantling anything are what keep distribution even over years rather than months.
